GPA Pocket Park
Elgin Historic District

In 2003, the Gifford Park Association acquired a small parcel of unbuildable property in the Elgin Historic District. Kane County was essential in making the transition work. The GPA applied for a City Neighborhood Improvement Grant and with those funds, were able to develop this small corner "pocket park." The project was completed with the help of many volunteers, including pro bono assistance from the firm of Paul Bednar Planning & Design, Ltd., who designed the grounds and coordinated all construction.

This project is a good example of how to make a community project work on a small $15,000 budget. Volunteers forged partnerships with developers and City staff in order to get a free supply of salvaged street pavers, and old historic benches fixed for use.

This project has won a number of awards from local agencies as it is valued by the community for its functional and historic design.
